Shopify alternatives, and when you would actually want one
Published
We build almost exclusively on Shopify, so take that into account. What follows is the honest version of this question: the shopify competitors worth knowing about, what each one is actually for, and a link to the full comparison rather than a paragraph pretending to be one.
The shortlist, and where to read more
Two platforms are the closest feature match to Shopify at DTC scale. BigCommerce is the nearest like-for-like SaaS competitor, and the comparison usually comes down to native features against app-store depth. WooCommerce is the opposite trade: you own the code and the hosting, at the cost of owning the code and the hosting.
Two are the smaller-store route. Wix and Squarespace are website builders that added ecommerce, not ecommerce platforms that added a website, and the comparison is really about how much you plan to sell rather than how the site looks on day one.
Etsy is a different question entirely: not a platform comparison but a decision about whether you rent an audience or build one. Most people asking about Etsy are already selling there and wondering if the fees are still worth it.
At the enterprise end, Magento and Salesforce Commerce Cloud (still called Demandware inside plenty of teams that migrated years ago) are the platforms a brand outgrows Shopify Plus into, or migrates away from once the licence and the engineering headcount stop paying for themselves.
Two are worth naming for completeness. Visualsoft is a UK-specific platform you will hear about if you have already spoken to a UK agency. And Shopify Plus is not a competitor at all, it is the upgrade path inside Shopify itself, and the comparison above answers when that upgrade is worth making rather than when to leave the platform.
When Shopify is still the right answer
If you do not employ engineers whose full-time job is your store, Shopify's whole pitch is that the infrastructure problem stops being yours. Hosting, PCI compliance, uptime and the platform's own upgrades are handled, and the app ecosystem covers the majority of what a custom build would otherwise need writing from scratch.
It is also the safer default while you are still finding product market fit. A platform migration is real work, on a real budget, for a business that is still working out what it sells and to whom. Most brands asking this question this early are better served spending that budget on getting their first hundred customers than on a platform decision those customers have not asked them to make yet.
When an alternative is worth it
The honest triggers are specific, not vague dissatisfaction. Deep custom catalogue logic that no app covers, an existing engineering team already fluent in another stack, a B2B ordering model with requirements Shopify genuinely does not meet, or a marketplace relationship you have simply outgrown, are all real reasons to look elsewhere. "Our current build feels dated" is usually a theme problem, not a platform one, and it is worth ruling that out first.
If one of the genuine triggers applies, read the specific comparison above rather than a general one: the trade-offs against Magento and against Wix have almost nothing in common, and the right answer depends entirely on which of the two you are actually weighing against.
Our bias, declared
We are a Shopify agency, and every comparison above was written by someone who profits when the answer is Shopify. That is exactly why each one names the cases where staying, or choosing something else, is the better call, rather than arguing every reader into the same answer. If we did not believe that, we would not publish this page.
Common questions
- What are the main Shopify competitors?
- For most DTC brands the shortlist is BigCommerce and WooCommerce as the closer feature match, Wix and Squarespace for a much smaller store, Etsy if the question is really about leaving a marketplace, and Magento or Salesforce Commerce Cloud (formerly Demandware) at the enterprise end. Visualsoft is the UK-specific one worth knowing about if you have talked to a UK agency already. None of them wins outright. Each answers a different size and shape of business.
- Is there a genuinely better platform than Shopify?
- For a specific need, sometimes. Magento still wins on total code ownership if you have the engineering team to run it. A pure marketplace like Etsy still wins on built-in discovery if you have no audience of your own yet. What we have not seen is a platform that beats Shopify on balance for a growing DTC brand with a normal engineering budget, which is most of who asks us this question.
- Should I compare platforms before or after I have customers?
- After, ideally, or you are optimising for a problem you do not have yet. A brand with no traffic gains little from a platform with deeper customisation, because there is nothing yet to customise for. Get to repeat customers first on whichever platform gets you there fastest, then revisit the platform question against a real order history rather than a spec sheet.
- Do you only build on Shopify, or do you help brands compare first?
- We build almost exclusively on Shopify, which is exactly why we say plainly where it is not the right fit rather than pretend otherwise. If a comparison below points you somewhere else, that is a more useful outcome for you than a pitch that ignores it.
