Web design & search · Manufacturing & industrial

Manufacturing marketing that brings the right enquiries in.

A manufacturer is not selling off the page. The site has to reach the engineer specifying the part, and get the enquiry in with enough attached to quote from.

01 Why manufacturers work with us

The enquiry has to arrive quotable

A buyer who has found you already knows the material, the quantity and the date. A name-and-message box throws all three away and turns a quotable enquiry into a phone call to get back what the visitor had typed once already. We build the form around what you need to quote, drawings attached.

We run a B2B distributor end to end

Black Sand sell beverage, snack and confectionery brands by the forty-foot container. We built the site in 2022, when they were trading over WhatsApp with no storefront at all, and we run the search, the lead generation and the paid ads behind it. B2B, long cycles, an enquiry rather than a checkout. Founder-led, 100+ builds across the UK and the US.

See that work

When trade ordering is the next step, that is our day job

Plenty of manufacturers reach a point where distributors and trade customers should be ordering online, on their own price lists, without an email thread per order. That is Shopify B2B work and it is what we do most weeks, on our own brands as well as our clients.

How we do B2B

02 How an engineer specifying a part finds and trusts you

A manufacturer is not selling off the page. Somebody technical is deciding whether you can make the thing to the tolerance they need, and the first message may be a drawing rather than a sentence. Nothing here is a lead you buy from us. It is a machine you own: capability stated in the terms an engineer uses, search aimed at the process rather than the industry, and an enquiry that can carry a file.

  1. Capability has to be stated in numbers, not adjectives

Materials, tolerances, machine envelope, batch sizes, lead times, accreditations. An engineer is checking whether you can physically do the job, and quality-focused solutions tells them nothing at all. Specification is the copy in this sector.

  2. Search is by process and material, not by industry

Somebody looking for a supplier searches the process plus the material, and often a tolerance or a standard. Those terms are low volume, technical and winnable, and they reach a specifier rather than a procurement portal. SEO for manufacturing that targets the industry word competes with directories and portals. Ask any manufacturing SEO company which process and material terms it would go after first.

  3. The enquiry has to accept a drawing

The natural first message in this trade is a file. A form taking a CAD file or a PDF, a quantity and a material turns a vague contact into something an estimator can price, and it is missing from most manufacturing sites.

  4. Long cycles mean the site works between conversations

A supplier decision can run for months and involve an audit. Case studies with real parameters, the certifications, and a page on how a new customer is onboarded, do the reassurance work in the gaps where nobody is talking.

  5. Distribution and direct need separating

If you sell through distributors and also direct, a site blurring the two irritates both. Say which is which, and where an end user should go, or the enquiry lands in the wrong place and somebody in the channel hears about it.

One live B2B distributor, and the exact scope we did on it. We built the trade store and run the search, the paid ads and the lead generation behind it.

Manufacturing marketing questions, answered

What experience do you have with manufacturers?

The work a manufacturer needs is the work we do: a site whose job is the enquiry rather than a checkout, ads that have to pay for themselves, and search that keeps the right work coming in. Black Sand is one of ours, a B2B distributor selling by the forty-foot container, where we built the site and run the search, the lead generation and the paid ads. Behind it sit 100+ builds across the UK and the US, founder-led, and two brands we run ourselves. Tell us how your enquiries and RFQs arrive today and we will show you where the site, the ads and the search move first.

Do you only build Shopify sites?

No. Shopify is where most of our work sits because most of our clients sell products online, and a manufacturer usually does not. We build on whatever fits the job. This site runs on Astro and Cloudflare, and the surfacing contractor runs on WordPress.

Our range is configured to order, not listed. Does that work on a website?

It has to, because the alternative is a PDF catalogue and a phone number. The useful version is not a shop, it is a way to narrow down to the right specification and hand the result to your team as a structured enquiry. What that looks like depends on how many variables there really are, which is the first thing we would ask.

We sell through distributors. Is a website still worth it?

Usually more so, not less. The specifier searching for a solution is rarely the person who places the order, and they are looking for you rather than your distributor. The site is where the specification decision gets made; the order goes wherever it always went.

Do you run the search side as well as the site?

Yes, and on these terms it matters more than usual. Industrial search volumes are small and the words are technical, so a page written for the phrase a buyer actually types is worth more than a large budget aimed at the phrase a marketer would choose. The site and the search work get planned together.

Do you run ads for manufacturers, and what actually works?

We do, and the honest answer is that search ads on specific part or process terms beat almost everything else. Somebody searching a material, a tolerance or a process name is a buyer; somebody scrolling a feed is not, whatever the targeting promises. LinkedIn has a place for recruitment and for named-account work, and it is an expensive way to reach an engineer who was going to search anyway.

Our sales cycle is nine months. How do we know an enquiry came from the site?

By recording it at the point it arrives rather than trying to reconstruct it later. The enquiry gets tagged with the search and the page that produced it, and that tag travels into your CRM, so when it closes three quarters later you can still see where it started. Without that step a long cycle makes the website look like it does nothing, which is the usual reason this work gets cancelled just before it pays.

Can the site take an enquiry with drawings and tolerances attached?

Yes, and it changes the quality of what arrives. A request for quote that comes in with a drawing, a material, a quantity and a date is one your estimator can price; a contact form produces a phone call that starts from nothing. Large file uploads need handling properly, and so does keeping a customer's drawings confidential, but neither is difficult.

Should we publish datasheets, drawings and CAD files?

Usually yes, and it is the most underrated thing on this list. Specifiers search for a spec and download a model, and a manufacturer whose files are behind a sales call gets skipped for one whose are not. Gate them if you must, but understand you are trading discoverability for a name.

Do we need photography of the factory, or is the product enough?

Both, and the factory matters more than people expect. Product shots prove what you make; the floor, the machines and the people prove you can make it at volume, which is the question a buyer is actually asking when they are considering moving a contract to you. It is one day with a photographer and it lasts years.

Do you call yourselves a manufacturing seo agency, or a digital marketing agency for manufacturers?

Either. Manufacturing seo agency, manufacturing seo services and industrial seo services describe the search half specifically; a digital marketing agency for manufacturers, or a marketing company for manufacturers, is the same team doing the site and the search together, which is how we would actually run it. Digital marketing agencies for manufacturing is the same query again with the words reordered.
