Web design & search · Charities & non-profits

Charity web design that turns a visit into a donation or a sign-up.

A charity site gets judged fast: is the money going where it says, and is giving or joining easy enough to actually finish on a phone. Budgets are usually tight, so the site has to work harder than a bigger organisation’s does.

01 Why charities work with us

The donation or sign-up path is the whole job

A visitor who has decided to give abandons at the first extra step: an account they did not want to create, a Gift Aid form buried on a second page, a donation amount that does not match what they meant to give. We build and rebuild that path first, and design everything else around it.

One team for the site, the ads and the search

A charity does not want three suppliers to referee. We build the site, run the Google and Meta ads (the Google Ad Grant included), and do the search work behind it, so the click the ads paid for lands on a page built to convert, wired into the CRM you already run so a supporter is tracked rather than retyped.

See that work

We will say if you do not need the bigger option

Charity budgets are usually tight and every pound spent on us is a pound not spent on the cause, which is the actual measure we would want to be judged against. If a smaller fix gets you most of the improvement, we would rather tell you that than sell the full rebuild.

02 How a visitor becomes a donor, a volunteer or a referral

A charity site is judged in seconds on whether the money goes where it says and whether giving is easy enough to finish on a phone. Nothing here is a lead you buy from us. It is a machine you own: three different visitors served without confusing one another, giving that completes, and a case for support a funder and a donor can both read.

  1. Three visitors arrive and only one of them is a donor

Somebody wanting to give, somebody wanting help, and somebody wanting to volunteer or fund you. They need different things immediately, and a site organised around the organisation rather than around those three intentions serves all of them badly.

  2. The person who needs help must never have to work for it

A beneficiary route has to be findable, plainly worded and usable by somebody in difficulty on an old phone. This is the part of a charity site most likely to be beautiful and least likely to be tested, and it matters more than the donation flow does.

  3. Giving has to finish on a phone, in one go

Every extra field costs a share of the people who had already decided. Suggested amounts with what each one does, Gift Aid asked simply, a wallet payment offered, and no account to create. Most lost donations are lost after the decision rather than before it.

  4. Where the money goes is the whole trust question

Impact stated concretely, accounts easy to find, and what a pound actually does. Vague warmth reads as evasion here in a way it does not in commercial sectors, and a funder is checking the same page a donor is.

  5. Budgets are tight, so search matters more than paid

Grant funding rarely stretches to a permanent ad budget, and a grant ad account has limits of its own. Search built around the need you meet, the area you cover and the questions people in that situation ask keeps producing without spend, which is the right shape for this sector.

Charity web design questions, answered

What experience do you have with charities?

The work a charity needs is the work we do: a site whose job is the enquiry rather than a checkout, ads that have to pay for themselves, and search that keeps the right work coming in. What we do is the whole engine: Google Ads and Meta for the enquiries you need this month, SEO for the ones that keep arriving without a media budget behind them, and a funnel between the two that brings the cost per lead down and qualifies what reaches your team. It connects to the CRM you already run, so a lead is tracked rather than retyped, and it is built as a foundation you can scale on rather than something that breaks at three times the volume. Founder-led, 100+ builds across the UK and the US. Tell us how your donations and volunteer sign-ups arrive today and we will show you where the site, the ads and the search move first.

Do you only build Shopify sites?

No. Shopify is where most of our work sits because most of our clients sell products online, and a charity usually does not. We build on whatever fits the job. This site runs on Astro and Cloudflare, and the surfacing contractor runs on WordPress.

Can you handle Gift Aid and donation processing?

We integrate with whichever donation platform or payment provider fits your budget, Stripe, GoCardless or a dedicated charity platform among them. We are not a payments or Gift Aid processor ourselves; we build the site around the provider you choose.

Our budget is small. Is a proper website still worth it?

If the current site is losing donations or sign-ups it should be converting, usually yes. But we will say plainly if a smaller, cheaper fix gets you most of the improvement, because a rebuild you did not need is money that should have gone to the cause.

Do you run search or paid media for charities?

Yes, matched to what the budget can actually support. We would rather run a smaller campaign properly than a larger one that cannot be measured. Charity seo measures around 480 searches a month in the UK at a low difficulty, and charity digital marketing about the same again, so the sector word is worth holding here even though the traffic that converts is usually the cause and the service rather than the category.

Can you set up and run the Google Ad Grant?

Yes, and for most charities it is the first thing to do, because it is ten thousand dollars a month of search advertising you are not currently spending. It comes with rules that get accounts suspended, a click-through rate floor and a ban on single-word keywords among them, so it needs running properly rather than switching on. It will not replace paid search entirely, and it will do a great deal for nothing.

Can the site handle regular giving as well as one-off donations?

Yes, and regular giving is the one worth building for. A monthly donor is worth many times a single gift, and the reason most sites do not convert them is that the monthly option is a second choice on a form built for one-off amounts. Suggested amounts tied to something concrete outperform an empty box every time.

How much does the design matter when people are giving to the cause rather than to us?

It matters because it decides whether they believe the money arrives. A donation is an act of trust with no product at the end of it, so the site is carrying the whole reassurance job: real photographs, named people, clear numbers, an obvious registered charity number. Looking underfunded does not read as thrifty, it reads as risky.

Are you a charity marketing agency, or a web design one?

Both, and for charities the split matters less than usual because the budget rarely stretches to two suppliers. Marketing for charities tends to arrive as one job: the site, the donation path and the search that feeds them.

Charity website design, nonprofit web design, non profit marketing agency: is there a difference?

Not in the work, only in who is asking. UK-registered charities tend to say charity website design; internationally funded organisations say nonprofit website design or look for a non profit marketing agency, largely because that is the American word. A charity website design agency and a nonprofit web design studio are the same supplier with a different homepage. What actually changes the job is whether you take donations, run a shop, or need Gift Aid, rather than which of those five phrases you typed.

Do you work with charities outside the UK?

Yes. The page is written around UK conventions, Gift Aid among them, because Gift Aid is a UK-specific scheme. The build underneath it is the same for an international or US-registered non-profit: the donation path, the tracking and the search that bring supporters to it. What changes is the giving and tax framing on top, which we scope to your jurisdiction rather than assume the UK version transfers.

Can you remarket to people who started a donation but did not finish?

Yes, and it is usually worth more than chasing a new visitor. Most donation abandonment happens on the form itself rather than a lack of intent, so we set up remarketing to the people who already started, alongside fixing whatever the form asked for that made them stop.
