Web design & search · Construction & contracting
Construction web design that gets the quote requests in.
A contractor does not need a shop. It needs the right jobs to land as enquiries, and it needs to know which ones came from search.
01 Why construction firms work with us
A live contractor site, and what carries across
Smart Surfacing Solutions is a contractor whose site we redesigned, instrumented and now run the search and paid work on. Surfacing is one trade of many here, and the part that carries across to a builder or a main contractor is the structure: a page per job you want, an enquiry you can measure, and a profile that holds the local searches.
Groundworks and surfacingThe enquiry is the metric, not the visit
A contractor is not selling online, so a session count tells you nothing. We set Smart Surfacing up with tagging, analytics and consent handling, so a quote request is recorded as a quote request and you can see which search brought it.
Built for a phone on a job site
Most of this traffic arrives on mobile, often on a bad signal, and a slow page loses the call before the page paints. Founder-led, 100+ builds shipped across the US and the UK, and a speed budget agreed before the build rather than a rescue job after it.
02 How the right jobs land, and the wrong ones stop earlier
A contractor does not need a shop. It needs the right work arriving as enquiries and the wrong work stopping before an estimator touches it. Nothing here is a lead you buy from us. It is a machine you own: a site that survives a prequalification check, projects proved with numbers rather than photographs, and an enquiry that states the value and the programme.
The site is read by somebody checking whether you are safe to appoint
A developer, an architect or a private client with a large project is looking for accreditations, insurance levels, turnover and jobs of comparable size. That is a prequalification check whether or not anyone calls it one, and having the answers on a page is often the difference between a shortlist and a polite no.
Projects are proved with numbers, not only with pictures
Value, duration, sector, procurement route and what the constraint was. A photograph of a finished building says nothing about whether you can run somebody else programme. The parameters do, and almost nobody publishes them.
Finishing on time is the fear, so it is the thing to answer
Every client on a project of any size is frightened of overrun and variations. How you handle programme, how change is priced, and what happened on a job that got difficult, written down, addresses the objection that decides more appointments than price does.
Search is narrow, technical and worth more than its volume
A build type plus a region, a procurement route, a sector plus a contractor. Low volume and high value, and winnable because the national firms are not contesting them. One right enquiry can pay for the year of work that produced it.
Qualification protects the estimating department
Project type, value band, location, programme, and whether it is tendered or negotiated, asked at the enquiry, stops estimator days going on work that was never winnable. Where a tender return is a real cost, that is the whole point.
03 The work
One live construction site, and the exact scope we did on it. We did not build the original, so we do not claim it.

Construction web design questions, answered
Do you only build Shopify sites?
No. Shopify is where most of our work sits, because most of our clients sell products online. A construction firm usually does not, so we build on the stack that fits the job. This site runs on Astro and Cloudflare rather than Shopify, and Smart Surfacing runs on WordPress.
Can you work on the site we already have?
Yes, and often that is the cheaper answer. Smart Surfacing came to us with a site already live. We redesigned it in place rather than starting again, which kept the pages that were already ranking and meant no rebuild of things that were working.
How do we know which jobs came from the website?
We instrument the quote request itself, then attribute it back to the search or campaign that produced it, with the consent handling that has to sit around that. Without it a contractor is guessing at which half of the spend worked.
Do you do the search work as well as the site?
Yes. We run search for Smart Surfacing alongside the site itself. Construction search is local and it is competitive on the money terms, so the site and the search work have to be planned together rather than handed between two suppliers.
Do you run ads for construction firms, and what should we spend?
We do, and we run them for Smart Surfacing. What to spend depends on the job value rather than a percentage of turnover: enough that a quiet fortnight does not end the test, small enough that a bad month is survivable. We would rather start modestly against a page built to convert than large against a homepage.
Can the site handle tender documents and prequalification enquiries?
Yes, and for commercial work it is worth building rather than leaving to email. A prequalification request that arrives with the right documents attached and lands somewhere countable is a different thing from an enquiry that goes to an inbox. It also means you can see how much commercial work the site is actually producing.
We are a builder, not a surfacing contractor. Is that different?
The shape of the problem is the same: local demand, a mobile visitor, and an enquiry that has to be measurable. Surfacing is the trade we have shipped in, and we would rather say that plainly than claim every trade. Tell us the trade and we will tell you straight if we can help.
Do you build a construction company website design specifically, or web design for builders more generally?
Both describe the same work here. Website design for construction companies covers contractors of every size, and web design for builders is the same brief with a different name. If you also want the search side, that is construction marketing agency territory, which we cover on the SEO page linked below rather than duplicating here.
Are you a construction web design agency, or do you take on other trades too?
Construction is the trade we have shipped in, through Smart Surfacing. We would rather be honest about that than claim to be a specialist across every trade.
Do you work with contractors and general contractors, not just surfacing?
Yes. Contractor website design and general contractor website design are the same job as ours, and a contractor marketing agency or general contractor marketing runs the same way: the site first, then the search and the ads on top. Construction company marketing that leads with a budget before the site converts is spending in the wrong order.
What about builders, groundworks, civil engineering and commercial work?
All the same shape. Builders website design, commercial construction marketing and civil engineering marketing each want the enquiry to arrive measurable and from the right postcode, so we build the site and the search together rather than treat any of them as a different discipline. Groundworks and surfacing have their own page in this tree, linked above, because the trade words there are searched separately.
