Web design & search · Groundworks & surfacing

Web, ads and search for groundworks contractors.

Groundworks is won on an enquiry, a tender and a relationship, never a checkout. The site, the ads and the search are there to bring the right jobs in and to show which one paid for itself.

01 Why groundworks contractors work with us

We already run a surfacing contractor’s site

Smart Surfacing Solutions lay tarmac and resin for roads, driveways, car parks and school playgrounds, domestic and commercial. We redesigned their site, set up the tracking behind it and run their search and paid work. It is live and you can go and look at it.

The enquiry is the metric, and the tender is the other one

Nothing sells online here, so a session count tells you nothing. We tag the quote request and the prequalification enquiry, and attribute each back to the search or the ad that produced it, so you can see which spend brought which job rather than guessing at the end of the quarter.

Built for a phone at the edge of a site

Most of this traffic arrives on mobile, often on a bad signal, and a slow page loses the enquiry before it paints. Founder-led, 100+ builds across the UK and the US, and a speed budget agreed before the build rather than a rescue job after it.

A drive and a garden are often the same job

A resurfaced driveway and the planting either side of it get quoted in the same conversation more often than not, sometimes by the same contractor. If landscaping is closer to what you do than groundworks, the funnel underneath is the same one.

02 How the right tenders find you, and the wrong ones stop

Groundworks is won on a tender and a relationship, and the buyer is a contractor with a prequalification list rather than a homeowner with a search. Nothing here is a lead you buy from us. It is a machine you own: a site that survives a procurement check, search aimed at the people who write packages, and enough asked that estimating time goes on jobs you could actually win.

  1. The site is read by procurement, not by a customer

A contract manager checking you out wants accreditations, insurance levels, plant list, capacity and three jobs of a similar size. That is a different page from anything consumer facing, and having it is frequently the whole difference between being on a list and being looked past.

  2. Recent work has to be legible to somebody pricing a package

Scale, sector, duration and value band matter more here than photographs do. A developer wants to know you have done six hundred plots, or a school car park, before, because that is what makes your programme and your prelims believable.

  3. Search is aimed at a narrow buyer, so it can be narrow

Nobody is searching a big head term for this. Package types, regions and sector words are low volume and high value, and that is the point: one right enquiry pays for the year of work that produced it.

  4. Paid media is for the sub-package work, not the main contract

You do not win a groundworks package from a Google ad. You do get found for the specific pieces, the drainage, the surfacing, the enabling works, by a contractor with a hole in a programme this month, and that is a sensible thing to buy.

  5. Estimating is expensive, so qualification comes before it

A tender return costs real estimator days. Value band, programme, site location, main contractor and whether it is competitively tendered or negotiated, asked at the enquiry, is what stops the department pricing work that was never winnable.

  6. Drainage is the half of groundworks that gets searched on its own

Groundworks wins work through contractors and repeat clients. Drainage does not: a blocked or collapsed run is searched directly, urgently, and often by the end client rather than the main contractor. Drainage marketing behaves like an emergency trade service while the rest of groundworks SEO behaves like a tender process, and the site has to carry both without pretending they are the same enquiry.

03 The work

One live surfacing contractor, and the exact scope we did on it. We did not build the original, so we do not claim it.

Groundworks marketing questions, answered

What experience do you have with groundworks contractors?

Smart Surfacing Solutions is one of ours, a tarmac and resin surfacing contractor whose site we redesigned and whose search and paid work we run. Surfacing is the trade we have actually shipped in and we would rather say that plainly than claim the whole sector; the shape is the same across most groundworks, which is local demand, a mobile visitor and an enquiry that has to be measurable. Founder-led, 100+ builds across the UK and the US.

Do you do ads as well as the website and SEO?

Yes, and for a contractor the three are one job. Google Ads brings the enquiries you need this month, groundworks seo builds the ones that keep arriving without a media budget behind them, and the site is what both of them land on. Splitting that across three suppliers is how a quiet quarter becomes an argument nobody can settle.

Do you do lead generation, or do you sell leads?

We build the lead generation, we do not resell leads. Bought groundworks leads reach three or four firms at once and are won on the lowest number, which is not a market worth competing in when a job runs to five figures. Your own site, ads and search produce enquiries that arrive at you alone.

Can you get us ranking for groundworks plus our county?

That is the target and it is a realistic one. Seo for groundworks companies is a local job before it is anything else: trade plus place is far less contested than the national terms and it is where the work is anyway. Expect the Google Business Profile and the map pack to move first on reviews and completeness, and the website pages to take months rather than weeks.

Most of our work comes from main contractors. Is a website worth it?

Yes, and for a different reason than a domestic firm would give. A main contractor who has been given your name checks you before adding you to a tender list, and what they find decides whether you get the invitation. That is a smaller audience than a homeowner and a far more valuable one, and it is why the site has to carry your accreditations and capacity rather than only your finished work.

Where do CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor go?

On every page, with the registration numbers, not just the badges. For a domestic customer they are reassurance; for a buyer at a main contractor they are a procurement requirement, and being unable to find them is enough to end the conversation before anyone calls you. Public liability cover stated as a figure does the same job.

Can the site handle tender and prequalification enquiries?

Yes, and it is worth building rather than leaving to an inbox. A prequalification request that arrives with the right documents attached, and lands somewhere countable, is a different thing from an email somebody forwards on. It also means you can finally see how much commercial work the site is actually producing.

Do you work with driveway and paving companies too?

Yes, and the work is close enough to be the same job. Seo for driveway companies and seo for paving companies target the same shape of search as groundworks does, a trade plus a place, with a homeowner or a facilities manager behind it. Smart Surfacing lay driveways and car parks, so this is the nearest thing we have to your work rather than an adjacent guess.

Should the site show our plant and fleet?

Yes, and it is more persuasive than most contractors expect. Finished work proves the standard; the plant, the yard and the size of the team prove you can hold a programme, which is the question a buyer is really asking before moving a contract to you. A site showing only completions reads as a firm that subcontracts everything.

Do you only build Shopify sites?

No. Shopify is where most of our work sits because most of our clients sell products online, and a groundworks contractor does not. We build on whatever fits the job; this site runs on Astro and Cloudflare, and Smart Surfacing’s runs on WordPress because that is what it was already on and rebuilding it would have cost the rankings it had.

Can you work on the site we already have?

Often that is the right answer. Smart Surfacing came to us already live and we redesigned in place, which kept the pages that were ranking and put the money on the parts that were not. A full rebuild is right when the site cannot be edited, cannot be made fast, or sits on a platform nobody will support.

Are you a groundworks marketing agency, or a web design studio?

Both, and the site usually comes first because groundworks marketing and groundworks contractor marketing both land on it, and a weak page wastes whatever you spend driving traffic to it. We build the site, then run the search and the paid work against it as one brief rather than two suppliers handing off.
