Build & Migrate
Squarespace to Shopify Migration
Outgrow the builder, properly.
(opens in a new tab) Squarespace Commerce is built for a beautiful site first and a scaling store second: limited variant depth, a thin ecommerce app ecosystem and a checkout with real ceilings. We rebuild the storefront properly on Shopify, carry every product, customer and order across, and redirect every ranking URL before launch.

How we migrate a Squarespace site to Shopify
Squarespace keeps trading while the new store is built and tested beside it. The crawl and the redirect map come before anything moves, and nothing switches until they pass.
-
Audit and Crawl
We map the current Squarespace site in full: the catalogue, the content and every indexed URL. The crawl is the part most migrations skip, and it is the part that protects your rankings.
-
Migration Plan and Redirect Map
A written plan with the data mapping, the rebuild brief and the full redirect map, signed off before anything moves. Disagreements are cheap at this stage and expensive after launch.
-
Build and Migrate on Staging
Data migrated, the Shopify storefront rebuilt, and redirects implemented, all on staging first. You click through the real store with your real catalogue before anyone commits to a date.
-
Launch and Monitor
Pre-launch QA across real devices, managed go-live, then monitoring of rankings, redirect hits and errors through the weeks that follow, with a named person to call.
Migrate Squarespace to Shopify
Why brands outgrow Squarespace
Squarespace Commerce is built for a beautiful site first and a scaling store second: limited variant depth, a thin ecommerce app ecosystem and a checkout with real ceilings. There is no clean export from Squarespace, so the honest version of this migration is a rebuild, not a lift-and-shift.
We migrate UK and US brands off Squarespace onto Shopify, designing a proper storefront around your existing brand and content rather than approximating the old layout in a new system. Products, customers, order history and blog content all move across, with every old Squarespace URL redirected.
This suits a Squarespace store that has outgrown the builder: a catalogue too complex for Squarespace variants, or a checkout losing sales at a volume that now justifies a proper platform. If the store is small and still finding its market, staying on Squarespace a while longer usually costs less than migrating early.
- A proper Shopify storefront rebuilt from your brand, not a Squarespace template exported and patched
- Zero data loss: products, customers, order history and blog content all transferred
- Every old Squarespace URL redirected to its Shopify equivalent before launch
- Access to Shopify's ecommerce app ecosystem and a checkout built to scale
Squarespace Shopify migration service
What a Squarespace to Shopify migration includes
Not a feature grid. Three questions: what you get instead of the Squarespace site, what happens to the catalogue and the content, and how the store keeps what it has already earned.
The storefront
Storefront Rebuild
Squarespace has no clean export for its proprietary section-based design system, so a Squarespace migration is a genuine rebuild rather than a lift-and-shift. We take your brand and your existing content and design a real Shopify storefront around it, rather than approximating the old layout in a new system.
The App Ecosystem You Were Missing
Shopify's app ecosystem is built specifically for ecommerce: subscriptions, loyalty, reviews, advanced shipping rules, all with real depth. We help you replace whatever workaround Squarespace forced on you with the native or app-based answer that actually does the job.
The catalogue and the content
Catalogue and Variant Migration
Squarespace's product and variant model has real ceilings once a catalogue grows. We migrate against Shopify's actual variant and inventory structure, and flag anywhere a product genuinely needs restructuring before launch rather than after a customer finds it broken.
Content and Blog Migration
Posts, pages and media move across, and every old Squarespace URL gets its own redirect. Nothing gets left behind because it lived in the Squarespace content system rather than the product catalogue.
What you have already earned
SEO Preservation
Squarespace and Shopify structure URLs differently, so a like-for-like redirect map is the part that protects whatever rankings the Squarespace site has already earned. Every indexed URL is crawled, mapped to its Shopify equivalent and given a 301 before launch, with a before-and-after crawl comparison so any loss is visible rather than discovered a month later.
Launch and the Weeks After
Managed go-live with the team on hand, then close monitoring of rankings, redirects and error logs through the period where migration problems actually surface. A migration is not finished on launch day, and pricing it as though it is helps nobody.
Decide
Before anything moves, the honest question is whether it should. Most of the money in a migration is lost or saved here.

The design is the thing people fear losing
Selling online does not automatically mean you have outgrown a builder. It means you have outgrown one when commerce becomes the point: when the catalogue is fighting the variant model, when stock sits in more than one place, or when the integration you need does not exist for the platform you are on. What usually stops people anyway is the worry that the site will stop looking like the brand.
Ginny Litscher is a Swiss luxury label selling hand-painted silk and wallpaper. We built her Shopify storefront to her own design, bespoke rather than themed, and it was live in seven days for her SS27 show at London Fashion Week. That was a new build and not a migration, and it is what the far side of one looks like.
Outgrowing Squarespace Commerce
What you are actually comparing
The gap is not aesthetic, it is operational. Squarespace is a website builder with commerce added; Shopify is a commerce platform with a website attached. None of that matters at twenty orders a month, and all of it matters at a thousand.
| Capability | Squarespace Commerce | Shopify and Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| What the software is for | A website builder with commerce added | A commerce platform with a website attached |
| Variants and options | Limited depth, and interdependent options get awkward | Deeper variants, with metafields for what they cannot hold |
| Inventory and retail | Awkward once stock sits in more than one place | Multi-location inventory, and POS in the same system |
| App ecosystem | Thin for ecommerce: a 3PL, an ERP or a serious email platform may not exist for it | Built for ecommerce: subscriptions, loyalty, reviews, shipping rules |
| Checkout | Real ceilings, and not yours to extend | Built in, and extendable on Plus |
| Wholesale and B2B | Harder than it needs to be | Native on Plus: company accounts, price lists, payment terms |
| Leaving again | No clean export of the section system, so a move is a rebuild | Your theme, your data and your content, exportable |
Migrate
The rebuild, the mapping and the redirects. Everything that decides whether the store you land on is better than the site you left.
Migrate Squarespace to Shopify
A rebuild, because there is no clean export
Squarespace’s section-based design system is proprietary, so nothing carries the layout across. That sounds like bad news and is usually the opposite: you get a storefront designed around your brand and your content rather than an approximation of the old one patched into a new system.
The catalogue is mapped onto Shopify’s real variant and inventory structure at the same time, and anywhere a product genuinely needs restructuring is flagged in writing before launch rather than found by a customer afterwards.
Squarespace Shopify migration service
Rankings survive the move, or the move was not worth making
Squarespace and Shopify structure URLs differently, so the redirect map is the single biggest factor in whether a migration protects your rankings or quietly costs them. A site that has ranked for years has the most to lose on the day it moves, and a blog is often where most of that value sits.
Every indexed URL is crawled, mapped and given a 301 before launch, then compared crawl to crawl afterwards, so a page that went missing is found by us rather than by your traffic graph six weeks later.
Before you commit
What usually goes wrong
Six failures account for most of the damage a migration off a builder does, and none of them is exotic. Each one is cheap to prevent and expensive to find afterwards, which is why the audit comes first.
The move is priced as an export
Squarespace has no clean export for its section-based design system, so a quote that reads like a data transfer is quoting a different job from the one that has to happen. The rebuild is the work, and pricing it honestly at the start is cheaper than discovering it in week three.
The redirect map is built from the sitemap
A sitemap says what you want indexed, not what Google actually has. We crawl the live site and pull Search Console’s own list beside it, because the pages earning the most are often the ones nobody remembers building.
The blog is treated as an afterthought
On Squarespace the content sits outside the catalogue, so it tends to be scoped last and migrated worst. Posts, pages and media move with their own redirects, because for a lot of these sites the content is what ranks.
The password reset lands as a surprise
Passwords cannot move between platforms, for security reasons, so every customer is invited to set a new one. Timed and worded with you, it reads as part of the launch. Sent cold, it reads as a phishing email.
The staging store gets indexed
A staging build left crawlable competes with the site it is replacing, and occasionally beats it. Password it on day one and check the index before launch.
Squarespace is switched off on launch day
It is often holding the domain, sometimes the email, and usually the only copy of something nobody thought to export. Keep the account alive for a while after cutover, even though paying for it feels like a cost you have just escaped.
The problems that matter rarely appear on launch day. They appear when Google recrawls, when the first customer tries to log in, and when somebody goes looking for a blog post that used to rank. So the same developers stay on it, watching redirect hits and errors daily at first and tracking rankings against the pre-launch crawl.
Support after launchHow we work with you
Audit first, decide after
A crawl, a catalogue mapping and a written rebuild brief, priced on its own. You end up with a migration plan and a redirect map you own, whoever eventually does the work.
Fixed feeFixed-scope migration
The plan signed off, then the storefront, the data, the content and the redirects to an agreed scope and date. The people who quoted it are the people on it.
ProjectMigration, then a retainer
Launch is where a migration starts being judged. The same developers stay on for monitoring, the fixes that surface in the first weeks, and the next round of work.

What comes with it
Read before you decide
The brands behind the stores we build and run.
Partners
Tools we have already run on our own stores.
The apps around a Shopify store decide as much as the theme does, and choosing between thousands of them is most of the work. We are a Shopify Plus Partner and we integrate the tools that sit around the platform. Every one of them runs on our own two stores before it reaches a client, so the recommendation you get comes from having paid for the thing and lived with it. When a brand already runs a stack that works, we integrate with it rather than rebuilding it to suit us.
How we use themStraight answers
Is this a redesign, or just a data migration?
Both, honestly. Squarespace has no clean export for its design system, so we design a proper Shopify storefront around your brand and content rather than approximating the old Squarespace layout in a new system.
Will we lose our Google rankings when we migrate from Squarespace?
Not if the redirects are handled properly. We map every indexed Squarespace URL to its Shopify equivalent before launch and verify them on the live domain afterwards.
What happens to our Squarespace blog and content?
Posts, pages and media migrate across, and every old Squarespace URL redirects to its new Shopify equivalent. Nothing gets left behind because it lived in the content system rather than the product catalogue.
Can Shopify handle a catalogue that has outgrown Squarespace?
Yes, that is usually the reason for the move. We migrate against Shopify's real variant and inventory structure and flag anywhere a product genuinely needs restructuring before launch.
How much downtime does the migration cause?
None your customers will see. Squarespace keeps trading while we build on a separate Shopify store, and we switch the domain once the redirects for every old URL pass.
Do you migrate US Squarespace stores from the UK?
Yes. We run migrations for US brands out of London, and the time difference helps: work done here overnight lands before your team starts the day.
Is this the right thing to buy from us?
Worth a conversation
- The catalogue has outgrown what Squarespace variants can hold
- The checkout is losing sales at a volume that now justifies a proper platform
- Subscriptions, bundles or wholesale need a workaround every time
- The integration you need does not exist for the platform you are on
Probably not this, yet
- The site is mostly content and the shop is a modest supporting line
- The store is small and still finding its market
- The real problem is the design, not the platform
