Shopify vs Shopify Plus
Published
This is the one comparison on this site where both options are the same platform. That makes it easier and harder: nothing forces the decision, so brands tend to upgrade a year after they needed to, or a year before there was anything to gain.
Shopify plus vs shopify and shopify vs shopify plus are the same question asked from opposite ends of the same invoice: one from a brand looking up at the upgrade, one from a brand already paying for it and asking what it is buying.
What is actually different
Start with what is Shopify Plus in the first place: standard Shopify with a narrow band of extras, sold at a much higher price. Most of the platform is identical on both. Same admin, same themes, same apps, same checkout for the customer. So an honest Shopify Plus comparison is really about that narrow band, and whether you are trading at the scale where it matters.
Plus gives you checkout customisation through extensions, which is the one page standard Shopify keeps locked. It gives you Shopify Functions for discount, shipping and cart logic that would otherwise be an app subscription. It gives you native B2B, with company accounts, buyer permissions and negotiated price lists. It gives you more storefronts, higher API limits and a support relationship with a name attached.
The cost question, answered honestly
Shopify does not publish one Plus price, because there is not one. It is negotiated, varies with volume and contract length, and carries a revenue component above a threshold. Anyone quoting you an exact figure without knowing your revenue is guessing, so we will not print one either.
What is reliable is the shape. The platform fee is substantially higher than standard Shopify and the transaction rates are lower. That means the decision is arithmetic, not opinion, and the crossover depends almost entirely on how much you sell.
Do this before anything else: take what you paid in Shopify transaction fees over the last twelve months and model the same volume at the Plus rate. For a high-volume store, the saving alone can cover a large share of the fee difference, which reframes every feature below as upside rather than justification.
The signs you have outgrown standard Shopify
The clearest one is paying apps to do what Plus does natively. If you are subscribing to a discount-logic app, a B2B app and a wholesale pricing app, add those bills up. Brands are often surprised how much of the gap they are already paying, just to a different set of vendors and with a performance cost attached.
The second is the checkout. If you have a real commercial reason to change it, upsells, custom fields, a delivery-date picker, and you keep being told it is not possible, that is the wall. It does not move on standard Shopify.
The third is selling to businesses as well as consumers, from one store, without running a bolted-on portal nobody enjoys. And the fourth is international: several markets with genuinely different pricing, tax and catalogues rather than a currency switcher.
When you have not outgrown it
Plenty of stores upgrade because it feels like the next step. Revenue growth on its own is not a reason. If your checkout does what you need, you sell in one market to consumers, and you are not paying apps to patch gaps, standard Shopify is running your business perfectly well and the difference is a cost with no return attached.
We have talked brands out of this upgrade. It is a short conversation and a much better one than the alternative.
Ask whether Plus is worth it for you
What upgrading actually involves
Less than people expect. Plus is an account change, not a migration: your theme, catalogue, customers, order history and apps stay exactly where they are, and the store keeps trading throughout.
The work comes afterwards, and it is optional. Rebuilding app-based logic as Functions, moving checkout customisation onto extensions, configuring Markets properly, setting up B2B. That is where the value actually gets realised, and a store that upgrades and changes nothing has bought a more expensive version of what it had.
Our Shopify Plus development service covers that work. If you are weighing Plus against leaving Shopify altogether, our enterprise platform comparison covers the other direction.
Our bias, declared
We are a Shopify Plus Partner, and Plus builds are larger projects than standard ones, so we profit when you upgrade. Weigh the above with that in mind, and note that the section telling you not to upgrade is there for exactly that reason.
Common questions
- How much does Shopify Plus cost?
- Shopify does not publish a single figure because Plus is negotiated, with pricing that varies by volume and contract length and a revenue component above a threshold. Anyone quoting you an exact monthly number without knowing your revenue is guessing. What you can rely on is the shape: a substantially higher platform fee than standard Shopify, offset by lower transaction rates at volume, which is why the crossover point depends almost entirely on how much you sell.
- What do you actually get on Plus that you cannot get on standard Shopify?
- The differences that matter commercially are checkout customisation through extensions, Shopify Functions for discount and shipping logic, native B2B with company accounts and price lists, more storefronts and expansion stores, higher API limits, and a dedicated support relationship. Themes, apps and the core admin are the same.
- Is Plus worth it just for the lower transaction fees?
- Sometimes, and it is worth doing the arithmetic before anything else. At high volume the reduced rate can offset a meaningful share of the platform fee on its own. Work out what you paid in transaction fees last year and model it at the Plus rate. If that number alone gets you close, the rest of the features are upside rather than justification.
- Can I move to Plus without rebuilding the store?
- Yes. Plus is an account upgrade rather than a migration, so your theme, products, customers, orders and apps stay exactly where they are. Most brands then choose to rebuild some of it to use what Plus unlocks, but that is a decision, not a requirement.
