Shopify vs BigCommerce

Published

These two are closer than any other pair on this site. Both are hosted, both handle the infrastructure, both are perfectly capable of running a serious store. The decision comes down to pricing structure, what is native versus what needs an app, and how much the ecosystem around a platform is worth to you.

The pricing models differ in a way that matters

BigCommerce makes a lot of its lack of additional transaction fees on top of your payment processor. That is a real difference from Shopify when you use a third-party gateway, and much less of one if you would have used Shopify Payments, which carries no extra fee either. Check which case you are in before treating it as a saving.

The structural difference is the annual sales threshold. BigCommerce plans carry a revenue ceiling, and crossing it moves you up a tier whether or not anything about your requirements changed. Growth triggers a price rise on a schedule you do not control, which some finance teams dislike more than a straightforward percentage.

Where BigCommerce genuinely wins

Native product options. BigCommerce has historically handled complex variants and configurable products better out of the box, and brands with genuinely complicated catalogues often need fewer apps to get there. Shopify has closed much of that gap, but if your products have many interdependent options, this is the one place to test properly rather than take anyone's word for it.

It also gives you more built in before you start adding apps: faceted search, more granular customer groups and pricing rules, and multi storefront lower down the plan range than Shopify offers it.

Where Shopify wins

The ecosystem, and it is not close. More apps, more themes, more agencies, more developers, more people who already know the admin without training. That sounds like a soft advantage until you need to hire, or replace an agency, or find someone who has already solved the exact integration you are stuck on.

It compounds commercially. A larger app market means the thing you need usually exists rather than needing building. A larger agency market means you are not locked to one supplier who knows your stack. That is worth more over a few years than most feature comparisons.

Shopify also wins on checkout at the top end. Checkout extensions on Plus give real control of the highest-value page in the funnel, and Shopify's own checkout conversion work is a genuine asset you inherit rather than something you have to build.

The honest summary

If you are already on BigCommerce and it is working, the platform is not your constraint and replatforming is an expensive way to feel busy. If you are choosing between them today, most brands are better served by the larger ecosystem, and the ones who are not usually know exactly why: a catalogue with unusual option logic, or a pricing structure that suits them better.

Ask us which fits your catalogue

If you decide to move

The product data moves cleanly, which lulls people into treating this as a simple job. The risk is the URL structure: BigCommerce paths rarely map onto Shopify automatically, so every indexed URL needs finding and redirecting before launch rather than after.

We cover that on our Shopify migration service. If the store needs B2B, multiple markets or checkout changes once it lands, that is a Shopify Plus build rather than a standard one.

Our bias, declared

We build on Shopify and not on BigCommerce, so we profit when you move. We have also told brands on a working BigCommerce store to stay on it, because a migration that solves nothing is a year of budget spent standing still.

If you want that judgement in writing without a proposal attached, our audit and strategy service gives you the findings either way.

Common questions

Does BigCommerce really charge no transaction fees?
It charges no additional platform fee on top of your payment processor, which is a genuine difference from Shopify using a third-party gateway. It is less of a saving than it sounds if you would have used Shopify Payments anyway, since that carries no extra fee either. The more consequential BigCommerce cost is the annual sales threshold on each plan: cross it and you move up a tier whether or not you wanted to.
Is BigCommerce better for large catalogues?
It has historically been stronger on native product options and variant handling, and brands with genuinely complex configurable products often find it needs fewer apps. Shopify has closed much of that gap, and the practical question is whether your specific catalogue complexity is one of the cases where the difference still bites.
Why do brands move from BigCommerce to Shopify?
Most often the ecosystem. The app marketplace, theme choice, agency availability and the volume of people who already know the admin are all larger on Shopify, and that compounds into faster hiring, cheaper support and more solved problems. The platforms are technically comparable; the ecosystems are not.
Is a BigCommerce to Shopify migration difficult?
The data moves cleanly. The trap is URLs: BigCommerce structures rarely map onto Shopify automatically, so the redirect map matters considerably more than the product export. Get that wrong and you lose rankings you already had, which is the one way a replatform costs more than it saves.
