Shopify vs Visualsoft

Published

We are a Shopify agency, so read this knowing where the bias sits. It is also a comparison with a twist most versions of it miss: Visualsoft builds on Shopify too, which makes the question less binary than it looks.

The false dichotomy

Almost every version of this comparison treats it as platform against platform. That framing is incomplete, because Visualsoft is a Shopify Premier Partner as well as the owner of its own proprietary platform, and describes itself as a unified retail agency rather than a software vendor.

So a retailer weighing this up may end up on Shopify either way, with Visualsoft as the agency. The real question underneath is not which platform, it is whether you want your platform and your agency to be the same company.

What Visualsoft actually is

Founded in 1998 and based in Stockton-on-Tees, with over a thousand UK retailers on the platform. The proprietary Visualsoft software comes bundled with design, hosting, support and marketing under one monthly relationship, which is a genuinely different commercial shape from buying a platform and hiring an agency separately.

That longevity matters in this comparison. A platform that has been running since 1998 with that client base is not a risky bet, and anyone implying otherwise is selling something.

The two cost models

Visualsoft ecommerce pricing is a monthly fee agreed after a discovery call rather than a published list, bundling the platform with the services around it. We are not printing a number here: their model is custom-quote, aggregator sites quote a starting figure that may or may not reflect a real deal, and repeating somebody else's estimate of a competitor's negotiated pricing is how stale claims end up published as fact.

Shopify splits the same spend in two: a published platform fee plus whatever you pay an agency. The total can land in a similar place. What differs is that you can see which half is which, and change one without the other.

Ownership, and leaving

The question worth asking early of any proprietary platform is what happens when you leave, and it is not a criticism of Visualsoft specifically. On a bundled model the platform, hosting and build are one relationship, so leaving means rebuilding. On Shopify, changing agency does not touch the store.

It also sets what the exit looks like in practice. A Visualsoft to Shopify move is a rebuild rather than a migration in the ordinary sense: the catalogue, the customers and the order history come across, and the storefront is built again rather than lifted. Worth pricing that in at the start of a contract rather than at the end of one.

That is a risk profile rather than a verdict. Plenty of retailers would rather have one accountable supplier than the freedom to switch, and that is a legitimate preference.

Where Visualsoft wins

Single accountability. When the platform, the build, the hosting and the marketing are one contract, there is nobody to point at when something breaks, which is worth real money to a retailer without an internal ecommerce team. Their UK client base and their years in the market are also genuine evidence that the model works for a lot of businesses.

Where Shopify wins

Separation. The store is yours independently of whoever built it, the app ecosystem is vastly larger than any single vendor can maintain, and the platform roadmap is funded by a company whose whole business is that platform. If you outgrow your agency, you change agency.

It is also the platform with the deepest pool of available talent in the UK, which matters more than it sounds when you need to hire or replace someone.

Our bias, declared

We build on Shopify and nothing else, so we are not a neutral source and this page should be read that way. What we would say regardless: if you are choosing between a bundled proprietary model and a separated one, decide that question first, because it matters more than any feature comparison. If you land on Shopify, our migration service handles moves off platforms like this, and the risk in that move is mostly the redirect and search work rather than the build.

Common questions

What is Visualsoft?
A UK ecommerce company founded in 1998 and based in Stockton-on-Tees, running its own proprietary platform used by over a thousand UK retailers. Often typed as two words, Visual Soft, which is the same company. It is not only a platform: it is also an agency, and now a Shopify Premier Partner, which means the choice is not always as binary as the question implies.
Is Visualsoft software a platform or an agency?
Both, and that is the part most comparisons get wrong. The proprietary platform comes bundled with design, hosting, support and marketing services under one monthly fee, which is a genuinely different commercial model from buying Shopify and hiring an agency separately. They also build on Shopify for clients who want that.
How does Visualsoft pricing work?
A monthly fee agreed after a discovery call rather than a published price list, bundling the platform with hosting, design and support. We are deliberately not printing a figure: aggregator sites quote a starting number, the real model is custom-quote, and repeating somebody else is estimate of a competitor is negotiated pricing is how stale claims get published as fact. Ask them directly.
What happens to your store if you leave Visualsoft?
This is the question worth asking early with any proprietary platform, and it is not a criticism of Visualsoft specifically. On a bundled model the platform, the hosting and the build are one relationship, so leaving means rebuilding rather than moving. On Shopify the platform and the agency are separate purchases, and changing agency does not touch the store. Neither is wrong; they are different risk profiles.
Which should a UK retailer choose?
If you want one supplier accountable for everything and would rather not manage a stack, the bundled model has a real case and their client count says plenty of retailers agree. If you want to own the store independently of whoever builds it, and to change agency without changing platform, Shopify separates those. Our bias is declared below.
