What a Shopify development partner actually is
Published
The badge appears on almost every Shopify agency website, including ours, which is a good reason to explain honestly what it does and does not mean before you weigh it in a decision.
The short answer
A Shopify Partner is anyone enrolled in Shopify's partner programme. That includes agencies and freelance developers, but also app builders, theme designers, and people who simply refer merchants and take a commission. Enrolment is open and free.
So the base badge tells you somebody signed up. It does not tell you anybody assessed them. That is not a criticism of the programme, which is designed to be broad on purpose, but it is the thing most buyers assume it means and it is worth being clear about.
Partner vs Plus Partner
This is the distinction that actually carries information. Plus Partner status is granted by Shopify rather than self-selected, and it reflects delivered work on the enterprise tier plus a working relationship with Shopify itself. An agency cannot simply enrol into it.
If you are evaluating agencies for a Plus project, that difference is worth checking specifically. If you are building a straightforward store, it matters considerably less than it sounds, and a partner without Plus status may be the better fit and the better price.
What the directory is for
Shopify runs a public directory where you can filter partners by service and location. It is a genuinely reasonable way to build a shortlist, and a poor way to finish one: the entries describe what each partner says it does, not how well it does it. Someone searching partners shopify or partners.shopify usually lands there, which is fine as a first step.
What the badge does not tell you
Who actually writes the code on your project. Whether the senior people in the pitch will still be involved in month three. What happens after launch, and whether support is a retainer or an afterthought. Whether they have built anything resembling your requirements before. None of that is visible from partner status, and all of it decides whether the project goes well.
Development partner vs partner
A lot of people searching for this are not typing “partner” on its own. They are looking for a Shopify development partner or a Shopify developer partner, and it is worth saying plainly that neither is a formal tier. Shopify does not award them and the directory does not list them. They are the words merchants reach for when they mean an agency that will actually build and run the store, as opposed to one that refers the work on or resells a subscription.
That distinction is real even though the label is not. Enrolment in the partner programme is open to anyone, so it covers app developers, theme shops, referrers and freelancers alongside agencies who do end-to-end delivery. When somebody says they want a Shopify development partner, they usually mean the last group. The badge cannot tell you which one you are talking to, and the checks below can.
What to check instead
Ask which stores they run today and go look at them. Ask who does the work, by name and role. Ask what happens when something breaks at nine at night. Those three answers separate agencies far more reliably than any badge, and none of them can be enrolled into. Our longer checklist for choosing an agency covers the rest.
Our status, declared
We are a Shopify Plus Partner, and we would rather you weighed that for exactly what it is worth than took it as a shortcut. It means Shopify has recognised delivered work at the enterprise tier. It does not mean we are the right agency for your project, which is a different question and one you should answer with the checks above. We also run our own two stores on the platform, which we would argue tells you more than the badge does.
Common questions
- What is a Shopify Partner?
- Anyone enrolled in Shopify’s partner programme: agencies, freelance developers, app builders, theme designers, and people who refer merchants. Enrolment is open and free, so the base badge tells you somebody signed up, not that anybody vetted them. That is the single most useful thing to understand about it.
- Is a Shopify Plus Partner different?
- Yes, and this is where the distinction earns its keep. Plus Partner status is granted by Shopify rather than self-selected, based on work delivered on the enterprise tier and a working relationship with Shopify itself. It is a genuine signal that an agency operates at that level. We are one, which you should weigh accordingly given where you are reading this.
- How do I find one in the partner shopify directory?
- The Shopify partner directory is public and you can filter it by service and location. It is a reasonable starting point and a poor finishing point: it tells you who has enrolled and what they say they do, not who does it well. Treat it as a way to build a shortlist, then apply the same checks you would to any supplier.
- Does the badge mean the agency is any good?
- On its own, no. The base partner badge means enrolment. Plus Partner means real delivered work at the enterprise tier, which is meaningfully stronger. Neither tells you who writes the code on your project, whether the team is senior, or what happens after launch, and those decide the outcome far more than the badge does.
- Do I need to work with a Shopify Partner at all?
- Not strictly. Plenty of competent developers build on Shopify without enrolling, and the badge is not a licence. What partnership genuinely gives an agency is earlier access to platform changes and a direct line into Shopify when something breaks at the platform level, which matters more on complex or high-volume stores than on a straightforward build.
