Shopify product page SEO
Published
Most checklists on this are alphabetical, which means you spend a week on alt text while faceted navigation quietly eats your crawl budget. This one is ordered by what usually costs the most.
The order that matters
Product seo on Shopify is mostly five things, and they are not equally important. Fix them in this order and the early items usually make the later ones matter more; do it the other way round and you polish pages that were never going to be crawled properly.
1. Crawlable duplicates
Shopify generates URLs generously. Variants, filtered collection views and tag combinations can produce far more indexable paths than you have products, and every one of them competes for the crawl budget you wanted spent on the real pages. Decide which filtered views deserve to be genuine indexable pages with their own copy, and canonical the rest away.
This is first because nothing further down the list works properly until it is settled.
2. Product descriptions
The rule for seo product descriptions is short: do not ship the manufacturer's. Supplier copy is on every other retailer selling the same item, which leaves search engines choosing between forty identical pages, and you will rarely be the one chosen.
Write what a buyer needs to decide, in the words they would use. Sizing and fit, what it is actually made of, what it does not do. Length is not the lever and keyword density has not been for years, but genuinely answering the question is.
3. Page structure
One h1, and let it be the product name somebody would actually type rather than an internal SKU description. Headings in order below it. Specifications in real markup rather than an image of a table, which still happens more often than it should.
4. Schema
Most themes emit some product structured data already, so check before adding: two competing blocks on one page is a more common fault than none at all. The gaps that usually matter are availability, price currency, and review data where you genuinely have reviews. Never mark up ratings you have not earned.
This is the one item on the list with enough in it to need its own piece, so it has one: Shopify schema markup, end to end covers which types are worth shipping first, how to find the duplicate markup nearly every store has, and how to validate it.
5. Images and speed
Product galleries are the usual reason a Shopify product page is slow, and speed is the part of technical SEO with the most direct line to conversion as well. Alt text written for a person doing both jobs at once. If speed is the constraint rather than the content, that is a different piece of work.
The checklist
- Filtered and variant URLs: decide which are indexable, canonical the rest.
- Replace supplier-supplied descriptions on anything you want to rank.
- One h1 per product page, and make it the product name a buyer would type.
- Check what product schema the theme already emits before adding more.
- Availability and price currency present in the structured data.
- Descriptive alt text on product imagery, written for a person.
- Image weight budgeted: product galleries are the usual speed culprit.
- Internal links from content and collections into the products that matter.
- Out-of-stock and discontinued handling decided deliberately, not by default.
- Collection pages given unique copy rather than a product grid alone.
Where we sit, honestly
Everything above is doable in-house by anyone with access to the theme and some patience, and plenty of stores should do exactly that. Where our Shopify SEO work earns its cost is when the fixes need development rather than editing, or when the catalogue is large enough that the decisions have to be made structurally rather than page by page. If you want the wider strategy rather than the on-page half, ecommerce SEO is the broader service and link building is the part nobody enjoys.
Common questions
- Do product descriptions actually affect SEO?
- Yes, but not in the way the advice usually implies. Length is not the lever and neither is keyword density. What matters is that the description answers what a buyer needs to decide, in their words rather than the manufacturer’s, and that it is not the same text sitting on forty other retailers’ sites. Duplicate supplier copy is the single most common reason a product page cannot rank.
- What is the most common product pages SEO mistake on Shopify?
- Leaving thousands of variant and filtered URLs crawlable. Shopify generates paths readily, and a store with heavy faceted navigation can produce far more indexable URLs than it has products. Crawl budget goes to near-duplicates instead of the pages you want ranked, and nothing on the page itself explains why it is not working.
- Does Shopify schema need adding manually?
- Usually partly. Most themes emit some product structured data, and the gaps are typically the parts that matter for rich results: availability, price currency, review data where you genuinely have it. Check what your theme actually outputs before adding anything, because two competing blocks of shopify schema on one page is a more common problem than none at all.
- Is there a Shopify SEO checklist worth following?
- The list below is ours, in rough order of what tends to be costing a store the most. Be sceptical of any shopify seo checklist with fifty items and no ordering: they are written to look thorough, and working through them alphabetically means spending a week on image alt text while faceted navigation quietly leaks your crawl budget.
- Should we write descriptions for search or for the buyer?
- For the buyer, then check it covers what people search. Those pull in the same direction more often than not, because the questions someone types are usually the questions they need answered. Where they conflict, the buyer wins: a page that ranks and does not convert has cost you more than it earned.
